My Week in Review (Cindy Sherman, A Quick Jaunt to Chicago, and My Lazy Cat)

I realize it has been a while since my last post. What can I say other than work has been really crazy. Here are a few photos from the past few weeks, which included a whirlwind week of traveling to Philadelphia and Chicago, a trip to the always inspiring Museum of Modern Art, and a narcoleptic cat.
This was the view out the plane window on my flight back from Chicago. I was literally in Chicago for 6 hours total - flew out at 6am and back that afternoon. I had to go give a last minute presentation for work, and to be honest I was a little nervous. I spent the entire plane ride there prepping for the presentation, but for the plane ride back I purchased Glamour and Rolling Stone magazines, some granola bars and coconut water, and spent the 2 hour flight alternating between reading articles on Jennifer Lawrence (I saw the Hunger Games and am now obsessed (and apparently so is every magazine)) and enjoying the view out the airplane window (I always try to get window seats so that I can do just that). One thing that will never cease to amaze me is the view out of plane windows. I've been flying my entire life so you would think that the novelty has worn off, but every time I look out the window and see the tops of the clouds, I can't help but be fascinated by the extreme beauty and grandeur. It really is amazing that we routinely fly above the clouds, having the opportunity to look down on the earth, and yet think nothing of it...

Changing gears a bit, last weekend my husband and I went to the MOMA to see the Cindy Sherman exhibit. Although the exhibit runs through June, I really wanted to go and we both have access to free MOMA tickets through work, so we took advantage of our empty schedules on Saturday afternoon to wander through the exhibit. Verdict: I was not really impressed. Now, in full disclosure I had not seen too many Cindy Sherman pieces prior to this exhibit. I knew about her mainly from my Art History courses in college, in which we looked at a few slides of her work, focusing mainly on this one where she photographed herself in a Caravaggio portrait.
The exhibit at the MOMA was quite extensive, featuring work of hers from the 70s through to 2008. Each room had a slightly different theme but all the pieces were tied together by the main feature of her work: they were self-portraits of the artist with over-exaggerated makeup and costumes, applied to make the viewer feel slightly uncomfortable and to make a statement on the roles of woman and the extreme lengths to which they will go for appearance. As I mentioned, I was not really impressed with the exhibit but I can't articulate one solid reason why. Her photos are slightly disturbing, and they're not anything I would ever look at and think "wow, I would love to own that and hang it on my wall." Additionally, I didn't feel like here statement was all that revolutionary, but I guess her place in photography, especially as a female photographer is quite impressive, so I have to give her that.
And lastly, I did a giant load of laundry on Sunday. This by itself is not noteworthy, but right after I folded the laundry and sorted it on the couch, I took the first portion into my room to put it away, and when I returned someone had decided that the pile of clean, nicely folded clothes made the perfect bed. The first photo was snapped while she was peacefully snoozing. The second one, where she is glaring at me, was snapped after I tried to gently wake her up so that I could put the rest of the laundry away...she was not amused.

West Palm Beach Photos and the Loggerhead Marinelife Center

As promised here are some photos from my recent vacation. I was in warm, sunny West Palm Beach, Florida and I had a great time. It never ceases to amaze me how good it feels to be out in the sun. One appreciates it even more living full time up north, were it is so cold from October through April that you avoid going outside unless absolutely necessary, and always bundle up like the little brother in A Christmas Story.

If money were no object, I would spend the majority of my life on a sailboat in the Florida keys. In my dream world, this existence would mainly involve sailing my boat in a bikini in 86 degree weather  and drinking Margaritas while listening to Reggae music, with dolphins swimming alongside the boat, colorful exotic fish to look at and treasure to find...
Only 1226 miles away from home!
These last two photos were taken at one of my favorite places in the world, the Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach, FL. The center was started 25 years ago by Eleanor Fletcher, and is dedicated to saving sea turtles (specifically the endangered Loggerhead turtles) through a combination of conservation and preservation efforts as well as educating the public on the dangers that the encroachment of man poses to the turtles. The center has giant tanks set up in it's back yard where they have recuperating sea turtles. The turtles, ranging from tiny hatchlings to adults weighing hundreds of pounds, are all in this "turtle hospital", recovering from injuries caused by boat propellers, fishing line entanglements, etc. Each turtle is given a name and has a story with details as to what caused their injury and what treatment steps are in place. My favorite was a young turtle named Poseidon. Poseidon got caught in a fishing line and it severed his back left flipper and his right front flipper. Despite only having two flippers, he was actively swimming around the tank and seemed to be responding well the the treatments and antibiotics. They plan to release him soon.

For $35 you can adopt a sea turtle.

I'm Back from Vaca!

I'm back! I have been very out of pocket for the past week and hence unable to post anything. The vacation was by no means last minute, and I had all intentions of queuing up some posts in my absence, but my work days leading up to the vacation were much more hectic than planned and as a result I did not have any time for posts.

But I did take some photos. Below - the view from my beach towel. Lovely, no?

Pewter Coffee Scoops and Mason Jar Wine Glasses

Here are some cute things that I came across while walking around in NC...
Large painted slabs of broken stones propped against a tree base for decoration (also please note that the flowers are in full bloom down here in NC).
Pewter Coffee scoops. Amazon sells similar ones for $24.95.
Mason Jar Wine Glasses (I believe these are actually called Redneck Wine Glasses, but I refuse to refer to them as that)...they are also sold on Amazon - set of 4 for $26.84.
So true.

Time in Paris via Vogue ES

Spanish Vogue has some beautiful photos of Monica de Toledo in Paris. Looking at these photos reminded me of walking around the narrow streets lined with beautiful architecture, and eating at quaint little cafes throughout Paris (although admittedly she is much better dressed than I was). Such an amazing city, and her outfits are equally inspiring. My favorites from these photos are the black fringe dress, pastel green pumps and red bag.

Chicago

I recently spent about 48 hours in Chicago. This was my first time there, and I left with a very favorable impression of the city. The people were friendly and the city was so clean, especially when compared to New York. I also really loved the architecture. There were so many different styles that all came together very harmoniously to make a beautiful and interesting skyline.

Another of my favorite elements of the city was Millennium Park. While I only spent a brief 10 minutes walking through the park, I saw many amazing sculptures including the Cloud Gate (aka "The Bean"), and Crown Fountain, a "video sculpture"/fountain, with two large rectangular faces spouting water.

Perhaps the only thing that I really disliked about Chicago was the deep dish pizza. Yuck! It was way to cheesy. I managed to have half of 1 slice and I felt so ill. I think I ate about 1 pound of cheese just in that half of a slice. Thank you, but I will stick to the NY thin crust.

Below are some photos from the trip. Disclaimer: I was only there for a short while and did not have my nice camera (only the iPhone) so the photos were limited and extremely fuzzy. These were the best ones.

Wedding dessert option

As mentioned in a previous post, I went to a wedding last weekend on a lake in NH. It was so beautiful! Instead of a typical wedding cake, they had a table set up with different types of pies (blueberry, cherry, chocolate pecan, etc.), and a small cake in the middle. I thought this was such a great idea! From attending previous weddings (and having my own), I have discovered that wedding cakes are sooooo expensive, and they usually taste anywhere from sub-par to terrible! I thought the idea of lots of pies (and ice cream), was such a unique and creative alternative to the traditional wedding cake (and all the guests really seemed to love it)! Plus, it went well with the country theme and made a beautiful display.

Country weekend in NH

It's always nice to escape the city for the weekend. Last weekend my husband and I drove to Sunapee, NH for a wedding. It was a beautiful wedding (photos to come), and we had a great time driving in/around Sunapee, getting lost in back roads and visiting antique stores. Here are some of our photos:

The Eiffel Tower

One of our photos from our honeymoon.

The Eiffel Tower on New Year's Eve...haunting and stunning.
